I have known about it for a few years, but have never gone before (&#8217;cause my interest in native plants and animals is only recent).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a great trail with a much different atmosphere and set of plants than the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Steck+Valley+Greenbelt\/@30.3834975,-97.7586923,18z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x8644cb66adcd615d:0x84ab8f158fcbc976!8m2!3d30.383509!4d-97.758484\">Hyridge trail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-962\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-962 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/beansproutadventures.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC07796-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beansproutadventures.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC07796-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/beansproutadventures.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC07796-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/beansproutadventures.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC07796-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/beansproutadventures.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC07796.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here&#8217;s the entrance. The big red &#8220;stay out&#8221; bar is just for cars. J likes it. Cochineal is a red dye-producing sessile insect that spends its adult life in a protective waxy, white cocoon. Cochineal makes a very good dye that was suuuuuper valuable in the past (before petroleum-based dyes were used). It is still used in cosmetics and food. You can see twist-leaf yucca in the foreground, and juniper and yaupon lining the path (both edible!).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The trail ended with a lookout over a limestone <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/box_canyon\">box canyon<\/a> with flame-leaf sumac, black walnut, and beautyberry (all edible!), among other things. Very nice!<\/p>\n<p>Check out nature preserves in your area!
