{"id":2618,"date":"2024-02-01T05:22:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-01T10:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beansproutadventures.com\/?p=2618"},"modified":"2024-01-23T21:58:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T02:58:27","slug":"hudson-gateway-tunnel-construction-site-to-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beansproutadventures.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/01\/hudson-gateway-tunnel-construction-site-to-be\/","title":{"rendered":"Hudson Gateway tunnel construction site-to-be"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>J and I checked out a spot in the Hudson Yards LIRR train yard, near the convention center, that is going to hopefully have some visible construction work towards the new Hudson river train tunnels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gateway_Program_(Northeast_Corridor)\">Gateway Program<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatewayprogram.org\/\">construction info<\/a>) to spiff up Northeast Corridor infrastructure between NYC and New Jersey, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudsontunnelproject.com\/about.html\">new tunnel under the Hudson<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudsontunnelproject.com\/documents\/2017-04-05_Preferred_Alternative_Figure..pdf\">map<\/a>) is going to be built so that the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_River_Tunnels\">existing tunnels<\/a> can be fixed up and to eventually provide more rail capacity. The tunnels were damaged by Hurricane Sandy, as were many of the other tunnels into New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s supposed to eventually be a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tunnel#Cut-and-cover\">cut-and-cover<\/a> section of the tunnel built right by the LIRR train yard. I wanted to see if work had started yet. J and I didn&#8217;t see anything, but there is a lot of equipment getting set up.
