Apparently Leland Stanford (Sr) was the governor of California for a time and lived in Sacramento. The house, originally pretty modest at around 2000 square feet, was expanded to 4k and then 19k square feet.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1217\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1217\" style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1217 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/beansproutadventures.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/MVIMG_20180219_120144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beansproutadventures.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/MVIMG_20180219_120144.jpg 528w, https:\/\/beansproutadventures.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/MVIMG_20180219_120144-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1217\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Front of the mansion in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Empire_architecture\">Second Empire<\/a>\u00a0architectural style.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Flood_of_1862#Sacramento\">really bad flood in 1862<\/a>, the house was raised up and a relatively low-value ground floor added. That particular flood was so bad that Sacramento was about 10 feet underwater for 3 months. Afterwards, the\u00a0<em>entire city<\/em> was raised a story, buildings and roads included.
